One-Pass Forestry Mulching in Memphis, TN

Track-mounted forestry mulcher grinding brush and small trees on a Memphis property

WHAT WE DO

Property line buried under privet and briars? A wooded parcel you need to walk, survey, or sell? Our track-mounted forestry mulcher grinds brush and small trees where they stand and leaves the mulch on the ground. No burn piles, no haul-off trucks.

  • Company-owned mulcher, no subcontractors
  • Demolition and clearing, one contract
  • Free on-site walk before quoting

Forestry mulching clears underbrush, vines, and small trees in a single pass. A track-mounted machine with a spinning, toothed drum grinds the growth standing, and the chips fall in place as a layer that shields the soil. Channell Demolition runs company-owned forestry mulching services out of Memphis, working parcels from Bartlett and Millington to Collierville and south into Southaven and Olive Branch. As a Memphis demolition and land clearing company, we’ll also tell you when land mulching is the wrong tool, like on a building pad that has to be grubbed and graded, and quote the right method instead. Call or text 901-482-7031 to set up a free on-site walk.

SIGNS IT’S TIME FOR FORESTRY MULCHING

Brush on an idle Mid-South parcel doesn’t hold still. Privet, honeysuckle, and sweetgum seedlings that a mulcher clears quickly this year become a thicket of finger-thick and wrist-thick stems in a few growing seasons, and every season adds machine hours to the brush clearing bill. Waiting also invites ticks and illegal dumping.

  • You can’t walk the property line or find the survey pins under the briars
  • Chinese privet or bush honeysuckle has walled off a creek bottom, pasture edge, or fence line
  • Kudzu and vines are pulling down the tree line along a road frontage
  • A surveyor, engineer, or soil-boring rig needs lanes cut through the woods
  • An overgrown lot is drawing neighbor complaints or a code-enforcement notice
  • A drainage ditch, utility easement, or right-of-way has grown shut
  • You’re listing a wooded parcel and buyers can’t see what they’d be buying

WHAT OUR FORESTRY MULCHING SERVICES INCLUDE

Forestry mulching is land clearing without the burn pile: one machine cuts, grinds, and spreads the vegetation in a single pass, leaving the roots and topsoil where they are.

Forestry mulcher clearing dense underbrush and small trees on a wooded Memphis parcel

A Site Walk That Picks the Right Method

Before a machine is unloaded, we walk the parcel with you, check stem sizes, slope, and wet spots, and confirm what you’re clearing for. Mulching fits underbrush clearing, trails, fence lines, right-of-way clearing, and lots that will stay in grass or woods. If you’re building on the ground, stumps and roots usually have to come out, and we’ll price full land clearing with stump grinding and grubbing instead.

A Track-Mounted Mulcher, Working in One Pass

Our track-mounted forestry mulcher spins a horizontal drum fitted with cutting teeth. The drum shreds brush, vines, and small standing trees, and the tracks spread the machine’s weight so it rides over soft ground instead of rutting it the way wheeled equipment does. The same machine handles brush mulching and forestry mowing on lighter jobs.

Keepers Flagged and Protected

Oaks, shade trees, and fence lines you want to save get flagged on the walk. The operator clears the understory around them and keeps the drum back from trunks so bark isn’t skinned. Want everything gone instead? We’ll clear it wall to wall.

Mulch Left on the Ground, Stumps at Grade

Ground material stays where it falls as a mulch layer that slows runoff, holds moisture, and shades out some regrowth. Stumps of mulched stems are ground down to about ground level, not below grade, so the roots keep holding the soil. There’s no brush pile to burn and no debris to haul.

THE OVERGROWTH PROBLEMS WE SEE MOST AROUND MEMPHIS

Privet thickets in the creek bottoms. Along the Wolf River, Loosahatchie River, and Nonconnah Creek drainages, Chinese privet forms evergreen thickets that shade out everything beneath them. A mulcher grinds the standing stems, but privet resprouts from its roots, so we’ll tell you upfront that a follow-up mowing or herbicide treatment is usually needed to keep it down.

Brush you can’t legally burn. The Shelby County Health Department states that open burning in the county is prohibited except under temporary land-clearing permits, and it names grinding or chipping as the preferred disposal method. Even permitted burns stop on code-orange air-quality days. Mulching skips the permit, the fire watch, and the smoke complaints.

Silty soil that washes. Much of Shelby County sits on wind-deposited loess, a fine silt that erodes fast once it’s bare. Pulling stumps and scraping a slope exposes it; mulching leaves the roots and a cover layer in place, which is why it suits hillsides, ditch banks, and ground near streams.

Junk hidden in the brush. Overgrown Memphis lots often hide old fence wire, tires, concrete, and the remains of outbuildings. We walk and flag what we can see before the drum goes in. If there’s a structure or slab under the vines, our building demolition crew can take it out under the same contract.

WHY MEMPHIS PROPERTY OWNERS CHOOSE CHANNELL DEMOLITION

Clint Channell founded Channell Demolition in January 2024 to handle commercial demolition and site clearing across the Mid-South. Here’s what that means when you hire us as your forestry mulching contractors.

Company-Owned Mulcher, No Subcontractors

The mulcher on your property is ours and runs with our crew. We don’t rent a machine for your job or hand it off to a sub, so the schedule we give you doesn’t hinge on someone else’s.

Demolition and Clearing, One Contract

Plenty of parcels need more than mulching: an empty house, a slab, a collapsed barn. We handle demolition and land clearing on the same project, so you’re not coordinating two contractors on one site.

Free On-Site Walk Before Quoting

We don’t quote acreage over the phone. A free walk lets us see stem sizes, wet ground, and access, and tell you straight whether mulching or full clearing fits your goal.

A License You Can Look Up

Channell Demolition holds a Tennessee contractor’s license, which you can check on the Tennessee license lookup. Learn more about Clint Channell and our crew.

HOW OUR FORESTRY MULCHING WORKS

Step 1 — Walk the Property Together. We meet you on site, walk the boundaries, and look at what’s growing, how big it is, and where the ground stays wet. You tell us the goal (open pasture, usable woods, a cleared fence line, survey access), and we tell you whether mulching gets you there or whether full clearing makes more sense. You get a written quote so you can compare it line by line.

Step 2 — Flag Keepers, Corners, and Wet Ground. Trees you want to keep, property corners, and buffers along streams or wetlands get flagged before work starts. If the clearing is part of a construction project that disturbs an acre or more, Tennessee requires stormwater permit coverage, and work in a stream or wetland can need its own state permit. We raise those questions on the walk so your engineer or developer can line them up before we start.

Step 3 — Open Lanes, Then Mulch in Overlapping Passes. The track mulcher opens access lanes first, then works the area in overlapping passes, grinding brush, vines, and small trees standing. The operator works around every flagged keeper and backs off near fences and structures.

Step 4 — Finish Stumps and Even Out the Mulch. Mulched stems are ground down to about ground level and the chips are spread so there are no windrows or mounds left behind. Roots stay in the ground to hold the soil, which matters on slopes and near ditches.

Step 5 — Final Walkthrough and Handoff. We walk the cleared ground with you, check every flagged tree, and touch up anything you still want gone. You’re left with open, walkable land under an even mulch layer, plus our advice on keeping resprouts down through the next growing season.

HOW MUCH DOES FORESTRY MULCHING COST IN MEMPHIS?

Forestry mulching is priced after we’ve walked the property. Two same-size parcels can differ widely in price depending on what’s growing on them. Because the mulch stays on the ground, there’s no hauling or dump fee built into the number, and for light to medium growth mulching is usually the lowest-cost way to clear. For broader context, see what land clearing actually costs per acre in Memphis.

What Changes the Price

  • Density and stem size: light brush and saplings mulch fast; larger trees take more passes, fuel, and teeth
  • Ground conditions: slopes, gullies, and soft creek-bottom ground slow the machine down
  • Access: narrow gates, landlocked parcels, or no room to unload the trailer
  • Acreage: larger parcels usually cost less per acre than a single acre
  • Selective work: clearing around flagged keepers takes longer than clearing everything
  • Hidden debris: wire, metal, and concrete in the brush that has to be found and pulled first

OFTEN PAIRED WITH FORESTRY MULCHING

Excavator completing full land clearing on a Mid-South development site

Land Clearing

When the plan changes from “open it up” to “build on it,” mulched ground still needs stumps ground below grade and roots grubbed before grading. We can take the same parcel from underbrush clearing to a grade-ready site. See our land clearing in Memphis for building sites.

Building Demolition

Clearing the brush often uncovers a vacant house, shed, or slab nobody has looked at in years. Our crew tears down and hauls off structures under the same contract. See our building demolition in Memphis.

Emergency Demolition & Storm Cleanup

Mid-South storms drop trees across the lanes and fence lines you just opened. We answer calls and texts 24/7, and our machines can clear the blowdown before it becomes a hazard. See our storm cleanup and emergency demolition service.

FORESTRY MULCHING ACROSS MEMPHIS AND THE MID-SOUTH

We’re based in Memphis, TN, and our everyday work falls within about 200 miles of the shop. Around home, that means Shelby County, Tennessee, and DeSoto County, Mississippi. Bartlett is next door. I-40 east gets us to Arlington and Lakeland, and SR-385 (Paul Barret Parkway) runs north to Millington. Germantown Parkway carries our trailer south through Cordova into Germantown, and SR-385 (Bill Morris Parkway) continues east to Collierville. Searching for forestry mulching in Collierville or Germantown?

South of the state line, I-55 and I-69 lead to Southaven and Horn Lake, and US-78 (Lamar Avenue) heads to Olive Branch. Larger commercial projects take our forestry mulching contractors across west and central Tennessee, northern Mississippi, central Arkansas, and northwest Alabama. The Mid-South’s long, wet growing season means brush comes back fast here. Late fall through winter, with leaves down, keepers and terrain are easier to see, though saturated ground can delay a start.

FORESTRY MULCHING FAQs

How much does forestry mulching cost per acre in Memphis?

Forestry mulching cost per acre depends on how thick the growth is, how big the stems are, the terrain, and how easy the parcel is to reach. There’s no hauling or disposal charge because the mulch stays on site. We give every customer a free on-site walk before quoting, so the number you get reflects your actual property, not a phone guess.

How long does forestry mulching take?

Light brush and forestry mowing go quickly. Dense privet and small trees take longer, and rain-soaked ground can push the start back a few days. Your written quote includes a timeline.

What size trees can a forestry mulcher handle?

Our mulcher grinds small standing trees along with all the brush and vines around them. Larger trees are felled and processed as part of our land clearing work, and we’ll note any of those on your quote. If you want big hardwoods left standing, we flag them and mulch around them.

Is forestry mulching right for a construction site?

Usually not by itself. Mulching leaves roots and a layer of organic material, which you don’t want under a slab, road, or building pad. For a building site, we grind stumps below grade and grub roots as part of full land clearing. Because we offer demolition and clearing, one contract, we can also handle any old structures on the same project. Mulching is the better fit for underbrush clearing, trails, fence lines, and land that will stay green.

Do I need a permit for forestry mulching in Tennessee?

Mulching itself avoids the open-burning permit that brush piles require in Shelby County. If the clearing is part of a construction project that disturbs one acre or more, Tennessee requires coverage under the TDEC construction stormwater permit, and work in streams or wetlands can need a separate state permit. Our land clearing permit guide walks through the details, and we’ll flag likely permit issues on the site walk.

Will the brush grow back after mulching?

Some will. Because the roots stay in the ground, species like privet and sweetgum can resprout, though the mulch layer slows new seedlings. Most owners plan a follow-up mowing or a herbicide treatment within the next growing season to lock in the result.

Do I need to be there while you work?

We need you, or someone who knows the property, for the site walk so we can flag keepers, corners, and anything you care about. After that, we’ll agree on site access and whether you need to be there before work starts.

How soon can you start?

We answer calls and texts 24/7, and smaller jobs can sometimes start quickly; larger parcels need lead time for scheduling and any permitting. Because we run a company-owned mulcher, no subcontractors, the date we give you is our own schedule, not a rental company’s.
